Dear SPSI Community,
SPSI deplores the recent spate of shootings in the US. We are aware of statistics that show there are 393,000,000 guns in the US, more than one per person.
This means that any prospective restrictions on gun ownership would be like closing the barn door after the horse is out. Nevertheless we support restrictions on the sale of assault rifles, with their highly destructive potential.
Though it is impossible for mental health workers to predict who might become violent, we support increased funding for mental health care so gun owners who seek treatment could talk about angry or impulsive feelings rather than act them out.
