Teaching Psychoanalysis in an Intersectional Context

October 27, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm, Back Classroom

In 2021, SPSI offered a course to Clinical Associates titled “Intersectionality, Social Context and the Co-Creation of Clinical Experience”, taught by us: Kathy Weissbourd and Kelly Lippman.

Intersectionality addresses the ways that race, class and gender can impact social experience, including discrimination and marginalization. The class discussed psychoanalytic writing on intersectionality, and it provided the CAs with an opportunity to talk about issues of diversity and their own clinical experience.

We were fortunate to have the support and mentoring of Dr. Anton Hart as we taught this class. SPSI agreed to contribute to the cost of our consultations with him, with the agreement that we bring back what we learned to the larger SPSI community. This fall we are offering a four-session reading/discussion group to faculty members/instructors who are currently teaching or have recently taught in the psychoanalytic training or 2YCP or are currently consulting with CAs. These meetings will provide support and dialogue as we address social context and intersectional perspectives in our teaching and consultation. We hope you will join us!
