September 20, 2024 — Separation-Individuation
[12 pages]
Mahler’s theory of separation individuation was a result of observing infants and toddlers, and identifying common themes. These concepts from symbiosis, to separation and individuation are a helpful lens through which to view psychoanalytic treatment, as well as consider potential areas of relational struggles in our patients. We will consider Winnicott’s notion of the use an object (as separate from the self) as a process of separation and individuation.
