Welcome to our four-week seminar on "Play in Middle Childhood". Based on your feedback, we will address the topic of play through a range of topics, including how to apply Self Psychology to the treatment of children, working with parents, and how to think about the “play space” when working with latency-aged as well as young adolescent children. I will discuss a case example from my practice that illustrates and pulls together the abovementioned topics. In our final class, we will read and discuss an article about a girl who engaged in self-harm as a concrete method of violently separating herself from the memories of the scars of her early childhood trauma.
Unless otherwise stated, all articles are accessible on PEP Web. Any article or chapter not on PEP-Web will be available as a PDF file before the first class.
At the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:
- Apply Self Psychology principles to the treatment of children
- Acquire an expanded view of the play space in child psychoanalysis
- Become more effective in involving and working with parents in child psychoanalysis
- Acquire a deeper understanding of how children communicate through primitive and non-verbal behavior
