Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute

History and General Information

The Seattle Psychoanalytic Training Center was established in 1946, sponsored by the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. Full Institute status was achieved in 1964. Currently, the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society & Institute is one of 31 training facilities accredited by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Standards established by the American Psychoanalytic Association direct the policies of all approved institutes as they relate to eligibility for training, the minimum requirements for graduation and prerequisites for certification in psychoanalysis.

The primary purpose of the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (SPSI) is the training of qualified persons to undertake the practice of psychoanalysis. The core programs are Clinical Psychoanalytic Training and Child Psychoanalytic Training. The Continuing Education Division of SPSI provides continuing education seminars and courses for mental health professionals, academicians, and other interested persons. The Psychoanalytic Clinic offers reduced fee analyses for adults and children.

The Institute provides facilities for its programs, including classroom space and library resources, as well as administrative services.

Policies regarding application and fees are described in the program sections. SPSI reserves the right to withdraw courses at any time, to change curriculum requirements, to modify tuition and fees and to change rules and calendar regarding participation upon notice to affected parties.

SPSI, a not-for-profit corporation, is governed by a Board of Directors. All matters pertaining to psychoanalytic training are the responsibility of the Faculty
